Ballet BC averts bankruptcy

VANCOUVER — Financially strapped Ballet BC has avoided bankruptcy thanks to strong ticket sales for performances of the Nutcracker over Christmas, but it still needs another $200,000 to avoid a New Year swan song.

The ballet company said Tuesday it's on pace to exceed its goal of selling 12,000 tickets for six shows of the Moscow Classical Ballet's performance of the Christmas classic.

Without those ticket sales the 22-year-old organization would have been forced to shut down.

Poor ticket sales and subscriptions forced Ballet BC's board of directors to terminate its 38 staff and dancers last month beyond the routine seasonal layoff and seek protection from creditors because of its $450,000 debt.
